HEALTHY NOTES - WALKING WISDOM

HEALTHY NOTES

WALKING WISDOM & DRINKING WATER

MOTTO – HEALTH IS WEALTH & WALK YOUR WAY TO HEALTH

The sold objective to encourage and foster the idea of “Arogyameva Mahabhagyam” (HEALTH IS WEALTH) is to lead A HAPPY LIFE by Human Being.

Ultimate  Aim is to achieve Heaven on Earth. Healthy people would not quarrel with others.  Similarly, healthy Nations (Nations with healthy people) will be at peace with one another, ushering in world peace, amity.  Universal Brotherhood and prosperity, for which the person has been yearning for ages. (League of Nations, UNO, etc.)

Healthy People & Healthy Nation

In human life, health is the prima facie important aspect without which, the mankind cannot lead a healthy and happy life.  Material richness and money will not help to keep the body physically and mentally fit.  In every service organization, whose objectives are to serve the people, for the upliftment of the poor the down trodden in the fields of education, health, decent living and several other programmes laid down to fulfill these objectives.

MAINTAIN HEALATH THROUGH WALKING

Quotations on WALKING

The art of walking is at once suggestive of the dinity of man. Progressive motion is alone implies power, but in almost  every other instance it seems a power gained at the expense of self-possession. – Tuckerman.

If you are for a merry jaunt I will try for once who can foot it farthese. – Dryden.

The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy; The best way to lengthen out our  days  is to walk steadily and with a purpose. The wandering man knows of certain ancients, far gone in years, who have staved off infirmities and dissolution by earnest walking  - hale fellows, close upon ninety, but brisk as boys. – Dickens.

The motto of Walking is ‘Health is Wealth; Walk your Way to Health’.  We should bring the overall awareness among the community on health consciousness and bring  awareness on the development of physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life.  Unless a person is physically and mentally fit, he/she cannot be active and successful in life and produce the required thoughts and actions to achieve the set goals.

KUSHWANTH SINGH LEAVES THE MEDIA AND LITERARY WORLD - IN DEEP SORROW
His last breath was @ 12.55 PM Thursday 20 March 2014.

NABRETIRE pays its TRIBUTE.

2014-15 KUSHWANTH SINGH'S CENTENARY YEAR.

 Khushwant Singh

Khushwant Singh (born 2 February 1915, died March 20, 2014) was an Indian novelist and journalist.
An Indo-Anglian novelist, Singh was best known for his trenchant secularism,[1] his humor, and an abiding love of poetry. His comparisons of social and behavioral characteristics of Westerners and Indians are laced with acid wit. He served as editor of several literary and news magazines, as well as two broadsheet newspapers, through the 1970s and 1980s. He is a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India.
Singh was born in Hadali District Khushab, Punjab (which now lies in Pakistan), in a Sikh family. His father, Sir Sobha Singh (builder), was a prominent builder in Lutyens' Delhi. His uncle Sardar Ujjal Singh (1895–1983) was Ex. Governor of Punjab & Tamil Nadu.
He was educated at Modern School, New Delhi, Government College, Lahore, St. Stephen's College in Delhi and King's College London, before reading for the Bar at the Inner Temple.[2][3]
Singh has edited Yojana,[4] an Indian government journal; The Illustrated Weekly of India, a newsweekly; and two major Indian newspapers, The National Herald and the Hindustan Times. During his tenure, The Illustrated Weekly became India's pre-eminent newsweekly, with its circulation raising from 65,000 to 400000.[5] After working for nine years in the weekly, on 25 July 1978, a week before he was to retire, the management asked Singh to leave "with immediate effect".[5] The new editor was installed the same day.[5] After Singh's departure, the weekly suffered a huge drop in readership.[6]
From 1980 through 1986, Singh was a member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 for service to his country. In 1984, he returned the award in protest against the siege of the Golden Temple by the Indian Army.[7] In 2007, the Indian government awarded Khushwant Singh the Padma Vibhushan.
Singh is said to wake up at 4 am each day and write his columns by hand. His works range from political commentary and contemporary satire to outstanding translations of Sikh religious texts and Urdu poetry.[citation needed] Despite the name, his column "With Malice Towards One and All" regularly contains secular exhortations and messages of peace. In addition, he is one of the last remaining writers to have personally known most of the stalwart writers and poets of Urdu and Punjabi languages, and profiles his recently deceased contemporaries in his column.
As a public figure, Singh has been accused of favoring the ruling Congress party, especially during the reign of Indira Gandhi. He is derisively termed as an Establishment Liberal. Singh's faith in the Indian political system has been shaken by events such as anti-Sikh riots that followed Indira Gandhi's assassination, in which major Congress politicians are alleged to be involved. But he has remained resolutely positive on the promise of Indian democracy[8] and worked via Citizen's Justice Committee floated by H. S. Phoolka who is a senior advocate of Delhi High Court.
He is married to Kawal Malik and has a son, named Rahul Singh, and a daughter, named Mala. Actress Amrita Singh is the daughter of his brother Daljit Singh and Rukhsana Sultana. He stays in "Sujan Singh Park", near Khan Market New Delhi, Delhi's first apartment complex, built by his father in 1945, and named after his grandfather.[9]
Khushwant Singh died in New Delhi at the age of 99 on March 20, 2014.

HEALTHY NOTES - Shri A.Satyamoorthy

HEALTHY NOTES

HOW TO KEEP FIT – CONTROL FAT – REMAIN SLIM
(NOTE PREPARED BY SHRI A. SATYAMOORTHY)

Although I am not a Doctor, after reading books purchased by me from Readers Digest, Book House Entertainment (India) – a private ltd. company, I desired to keep all retired officers as to how to keep fit as we are aging. However our President was good enough to suggest to put down my ideas on this important subject- hence this note. I am sure all the members will be happy to read and follow my suggestion.
1.       Longevity: Scientists and Research Scholars have come to the conclusion that our longevity depends on our own heredity. It means and includes that our Parents, Grand Parents and Great Grand Parents lived for long period, we can also expect to live, and other things remaining constant, one can normally expect to live for a long life depending on our heredity.
2.       Habits: We have two kinds of habits – Innate and Acquired. Innate qualities are two kinds
(i)                Some are born with pride, jealously, hatred, proud about their families, dishonest etc.
(ii)                While the other remain simple, follow ‘live and let others also live’ policy, remain honest etc.
I am reminded about a Bible saying ‘Pride goeth before a fall and haughty spirit before destruction’ (pathananiki karanam garvam, vinasananiki karanam kopam, ahankaram. Manam idi gurthunchukovali, Entha thwaraga manam ‘live and let others also live’ policy follow aithe Stress and Strain will not enter our body and soul. We remain in peace and hence there will be no health problem. O.K. so far so good.
Acquired Qualities: These are listed below.
a)      Smoking: Tobacco in any form should be avoided by us. There is a saying that even the animals do not eat tobacco leaves. Smoking cigars, cigarettes, pipe etc. are likely to cause mouth cancer. The earlier we avoid smoking in any form the better will be your health. Doctors have also informed that those who inhale that smoke will also be great sufferers causing health problems. Therefore please avoid smoking.
b)      Drinking: This should also be avoided to remain healthy. Sometimes Doctors prescribe heart patients after bypass or Angeography to take brandy (2 pegs). Those who are accustomed for drinks should not forget that health is more important than anything. Hence moderate drinking only should be our goal, if you want to keep fit and live longer healthy life.
c)       Drinking Coffee is also not good for health. Coffee contains COFFINE which increases your cholesterol which is injurious to health. Coffee is 3 kinds – Ardica, Robusta and San Roman which we drink in a brand variety of Ardica and Robusta, San Roman is not sold as it has no quality but quantity is more. Tea, why we should drink either coffee or tea? Taste, Warmth and Aroma are the 3 qualities of these drinks. Why not be contended with a glass of juice. Please consider. If you feel that you want vigour and stimulant, take Tea but avoid Coffee as far as possible to remain healthy.
d)      Tea is six kinds (1) Orthodox – select two leaves and a bud avoiding course plucking, But this is very costly and hence let us avoid it. (2) the next variety is CTC, Curling, Twisting and curing hence CTC. It is good to purchase from good company products. Tata CTC is good that red or green label. (3) Green leaf Tea with warm water is good but where do we get – In Calcutta you can have Green Leaf Tea but not elsewhere. (4) Decimation of Tea is also good (called Tea liquor) or If you mix with lime juice it will be much better for health. (5) Package tea is convenient, but the packets mostly contain dust Tea, rejected stuff of sending etc. If you want to drink packed Tea please purchase Tata product. TETLEY Tea which is very good but packets costRs.140/-. Cost factor alone will have to be kept in view with our meager pension. In my opinion it is good to take Red and Green label packets. But never take Ootacamund Tea which is very poor quality. So if one wants readily to have a stimulant tea, purchase TETLEY TEA. It gives taste, warmth and aroma. But Tea liquor with lemon juice is much better.
3.       Physical Exercise: (i) People who are let us say 60 years should go for brisk walking for 45 minutes preferably in a park. Above 75 years old people should walk for 30 minutes (both ways). Make it a practice to go for walking at least 1.5 kms in the evening. It is good for health and it will keep you fit. On return take 1 or 2 cups of water, if possible juice, but let us not start the day with coffee. Forget it after 60 years. After coming back from walking, the first thing you should do is wash your hands in the flowing water with dettol liquid. This is a must. This should be made a practice when ever you go out and return home. This is the first precaution for your habit.
(iii)               What we have done as drill class in our childhood days is extremely good. You will not have knee pain, back pain etc.
4.       YOGA is four kinds – Physical exercise, Asanas, Breathing exercise and Meditation. Among asanas practice Padmasanam or half Padmasanam,  you can combine from any other with this exercise.  Apart from padmasana, sitting on knees like Muslims pray namaz is extremely good. Sit in this position and keep your hands behind your back. Try to reach both hands in locking position which is extremely good. All these Asanas one should practice atleast for 10 minutes. Last is Savasanam – lie down and remain in a flat position for at least 10 minutes. So far so good.
5.       Our enemies for good health are (i) salt (ii) sugar (iii) oil and (iv) mirchi. Better to take with less or with no salt. Oil must be avoided- one litre per month, no sugar, less karam. If you can afford olive oil it is better. Those who are meat eaters – avoid red meat – take chicken or fish – that too once a week – let us say Sunday. Avoid junk foods from stalls on each side of roads. They are prepared in palm oil which is very harmful for health. Eat leafy vegetables – avoid potato or other root crops – leafy vegetables, cauliflower are good. Avoid brinjal (vankaya). Take fruits – apples, guava, pine apple, boppaya fruits. They are good for health.
Last but not the least – I am practicing for the past 10-12 years. My breakfast consists of cornflakes, quakers oats with milk – no sugar please – chocolate varieties of cornflakes must be avoided. If you have problems of constipation eat guava jamakayas every day. In the old age our system also becomes old, Don’t go for laxations, you will be addicted to that. Plenty of fruits eating will keep you fit. Take 2 to 5 litres of mineral water depending on your age.
Keep your mind busy – reading good news papers as sensitive telugu papers should be avoided.
Solve puzzles – Hindu quick cross word puzzle with the help of dictionary, I have 6 of them:
(1)    Synonyms and Antonyms, thesaurus, (2) oxford (3) readers Digest dictionary with origin of words (4) Children dictionary with pictures (5) Word power of R D. They are very helpful. Editions of 10 books encyclopedia – Rs.500/- is a good asset for your mini library.
Laughter: It is one kind of exercise – I have practiced laughing at least 10 minutes per day after evening walk. Remember good old things of school/college/office experiences etc and laugh. Remember that laughter is the best medicine for good health. You may laugh at this suggestion. That itself is a good reason for laughter.
Energy Power comes our precious heart. Whatever is eaten is converted into blood and our heart keeps on pumping energy to our body. Comfortable 7 to 8 hours sleep is necessary for our body. Rest is good but don’t sleep in day time. Avoid siesta after lunch.
Friends I have written these lines from my personal experiences. No exaggeration or unnecessary advice. Health is more important than Wealth. Let us hope that these small and simple suggestions which I have written above will be suitable for you. Sorry for taking long time. I am happy if you accept this with patience. Best of Luck. I thank for your patience. I hope it is not boring.
Remember one ounce of practice is better than one pound of theory      GOOD LUCK
