HEALTHY NOTES - Shri A.Satyamoorthy

HEALTHY NOTES

HOW TO KEEP FIT – CONTROL FAT – REMAIN SLIM
(NOTE PREPARED BY SHRI A. SATYAMOORTHY)

Although I am not a Doctor, after reading books purchased by me from Readers Digest, Book House Entertainment (India) – a private ltd. company, I desired to keep all retired officers as to how to keep fit as we are aging. However our President was good enough to suggest to put down my ideas on this important subject- hence this note. I am sure all the members will be happy to read and follow my suggestion.
1.       Longevity: Scientists and Research Scholars have come to the conclusion that our longevity depends on our own heredity. It means and includes that our Parents, Grand Parents and Great Grand Parents lived for long period, we can also expect to live, and other things remaining constant, one can normally expect to live for a long life depending on our heredity.
2.       Habits: We have two kinds of habits – Innate and Acquired. Innate qualities are two kinds
(i)                Some are born with pride, jealously, hatred, proud about their families, dishonest etc.
(ii)                While the other remain simple, follow ‘live and let others also live’ policy, remain honest etc.
I am reminded about a Bible saying ‘Pride goeth before a fall and haughty spirit before destruction’ (pathananiki karanam garvam, vinasananiki karanam kopam, ahankaram. Manam idi gurthunchukovali, Entha thwaraga manam ‘live and let others also live’ policy follow aithe Stress and Strain will not enter our body and soul. We remain in peace and hence there will be no health problem. O.K. so far so good.
Acquired Qualities: These are listed below.
a)      Smoking: Tobacco in any form should be avoided by us. There is a saying that even the animals do not eat tobacco leaves. Smoking cigars, cigarettes, pipe etc. are likely to cause mouth cancer. The earlier we avoid smoking in any form the better will be your health. Doctors have also informed that those who inhale that smoke will also be great sufferers causing health problems. Therefore please avoid smoking.
b)      Drinking: This should also be avoided to remain healthy. Sometimes Doctors prescribe heart patients after bypass or Angeography to take brandy (2 pegs). Those who are accustomed for drinks should not forget that health is more important than anything. Hence moderate drinking only should be our goal, if you want to keep fit and live longer healthy life.
c)       Drinking Coffee is also not good for health. Coffee contains COFFINE which increases your cholesterol which is injurious to health. Coffee is 3 kinds – Ardica, Robusta and San Roman which we drink in a brand variety of Ardica and Robusta, San Roman is not sold as it has no quality but quantity is more. Tea, why we should drink either coffee or tea? Taste, Warmth and Aroma are the 3 qualities of these drinks. Why not be contended with a glass of juice. Please consider. If you feel that you want vigour and stimulant, take Tea but avoid Coffee as far as possible to remain healthy.
d)      Tea is six kinds (1) Orthodox – select two leaves and a bud avoiding course plucking, But this is very costly and hence let us avoid it. (2) the next variety is CTC, Curling, Twisting and curing hence CTC. It is good to purchase from good company products. Tata CTC is good that red or green label. (3) Green leaf Tea with warm water is good but where do we get – In Calcutta you can have Green Leaf Tea but not elsewhere. (4) Decimation of Tea is also good (called Tea liquor) or If you mix with lime juice it will be much better for health. (5) Package tea is convenient, but the packets mostly contain dust Tea, rejected stuff of sending etc. If you want to drink packed Tea please purchase Tata product. TETLEY Tea which is very good but packets costRs.140/-. Cost factor alone will have to be kept in view with our meager pension. In my opinion it is good to take Red and Green label packets. But never take Ootacamund Tea which is very poor quality. So if one wants readily to have a stimulant tea, purchase TETLEY TEA. It gives taste, warmth and aroma. But Tea liquor with lemon juice is much better.
3.       Physical Exercise: (i) People who are let us say 60 years should go for brisk walking for 45 minutes preferably in a park. Above 75 years old people should walk for 30 minutes (both ways). Make it a practice to go for walking at least 1.5 kms in the evening. It is good for health and it will keep you fit. On return take 1 or 2 cups of water, if possible juice, but let us not start the day with coffee. Forget it after 60 years. After coming back from walking, the first thing you should do is wash your hands in the flowing water with dettol liquid. This is a must. This should be made a practice when ever you go out and return home. This is the first precaution for your habit.
(iii)               What we have done as drill class in our childhood days is extremely good. You will not have knee pain, back pain etc.
4.       YOGA is four kinds – Physical exercise, Asanas, Breathing exercise and Meditation. Among asanas practice Padmasanam or half Padmasanam,  you can combine from any other with this exercise.  Apart from padmasana, sitting on knees like Muslims pray namaz is extremely good. Sit in this position and keep your hands behind your back. Try to reach both hands in locking position which is extremely good. All these Asanas one should practice atleast for 10 minutes. Last is Savasanam – lie down and remain in a flat position for at least 10 minutes. So far so good.
5.       Our enemies for good health are (i) salt (ii) sugar (iii) oil and (iv) mirchi. Better to take with less or with no salt. Oil must be avoided- one litre per month, no sugar, less karam. If you can afford olive oil it is better. Those who are meat eaters – avoid red meat – take chicken or fish – that too once a week – let us say Sunday. Avoid junk foods from stalls on each side of roads. They are prepared in palm oil which is very harmful for health. Eat leafy vegetables – avoid potato or other root crops – leafy vegetables, cauliflower are good. Avoid brinjal (vankaya). Take fruits – apples, guava, pine apple, boppaya fruits. They are good for health.
Last but not the least – I am practicing for the past 10-12 years. My breakfast consists of cornflakes, quakers oats with milk – no sugar please – chocolate varieties of cornflakes must be avoided. If you have problems of constipation eat guava jamakayas every day. In the old age our system also becomes old, Don’t go for laxations, you will be addicted to that. Plenty of fruits eating will keep you fit. Take 2 to 5 litres of mineral water depending on your age.
Keep your mind busy – reading good news papers as sensitive telugu papers should be avoided.
Solve puzzles – Hindu quick cross word puzzle with the help of dictionary, I have 6 of them:
(1)    Synonyms and Antonyms, thesaurus, (2) oxford (3) readers Digest dictionary with origin of words (4) Children dictionary with pictures (5) Word power of R D. They are very helpful. Editions of 10 books encyclopedia – Rs.500/- is a good asset for your mini library.
Laughter: It is one kind of exercise – I have practiced laughing at least 10 minutes per day after evening walk. Remember good old things of school/college/office experiences etc and laugh. Remember that laughter is the best medicine for good health. You may laugh at this suggestion. That itself is a good reason for laughter.
Energy Power comes our precious heart. Whatever is eaten is converted into blood and our heart keeps on pumping energy to our body. Comfortable 7 to 8 hours sleep is necessary for our body. Rest is good but don’t sleep in day time. Avoid siesta after lunch.
Friends I have written these lines from my personal experiences. No exaggeration or unnecessary advice. Health is more important than Wealth. Let us hope that these small and simple suggestions which I have written above will be suitable for you. Sorry for taking long time. I am happy if you accept this with patience. Best of Luck. I thank for your patience. I hope it is not boring.
Remember one ounce of practice is better than one pound of theory      GOOD LUCK
